  4. 04US tech stocks fell sharply on fears over AI spending costs.
  5. 05Blackstone says Anthropic may miss an investment-grade rating after its IPO.
  6. 06Cohere commits C$4 billion to Canada, promising 1,500+ jobs through 2031.

The Lead

A backdoored Claude Code extension appeared on the Cursor Marketplace, and three independent write-ups landed on Hacker News within the window (phorion.io, Kevin Beaumont's post, and DoublePulsar). DoublePulsar's headline says the extension delivered a remote access trojan to Claude developer laptops. The scope of infection is not established in the material we have. Coding agents run with shell and file access, so a compromised extension in their distribution channel gives an attacker the developer's machine, credentials and source. Every lab shipping an agent through a third-party marketplace now has the same exposure.

Backdoor found in Claude Code VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace

Researchers report that the Claude Code extension distributed through the Cursor Marketplace contains a backdoor. Three separate posts cover it. DoublePulsar's headline says it delivered a remote access trojan to developer laptops worldwide and frames the incident as an attack on Anthropic's distribution.

Why it matters

Agent tooling is now a high-value supply-chain target, because the extension sits next to a developer's secrets and codebase. Marketplace vetting for "official" listings has failed in the one place where trust matters most.

Gemini 4 Carbon ranks #1 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5

Artificial Analysis reports that Google's Gemini 4 Carbon now leads its Intelligence Index v5 suite. The post is the primary source. The index is a single composite from one third-party evaluator.

Why it matters

Google takes the top slot on a widely cited independent leaderboard, which shapes procurement shortlists. One composite index is not a verdict on any specific workload.

Blackstone: Anthropic may not secure investment-grade rating after IPO

The FT reports Blackstone's view that Anthropic may fail to earn an investment-grade credit rating after going public, citing the company's economics.

Why it matters

A sub-investment-grade rating raises debt costs for a company that needs heavy compute financing. It also shows that credit investors see frontier-lab margins differently than equity bulls do.

Cohere commits C$4 billion to Canadian AI expansion, targeting 1,500+ jobs

Cohere says it will invest C$4 billion in Canada through 2031. The plan covers research infrastructure and more than 1,500 jobs.

Why it matters

It is a large, dated national-scale commitment from a non-US frontier lab, arriving the same week markets are doubting AI spend. It also strengthens the sovereign-AI pitch to governments and regulated buyers.

Patterns

Coding-agent supply chain under attack

Three independent write-ups from phorion.io, Kevin Beaumont and DoublePulsar document the same backdoored Claude Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace.

Capital scrutiny meets big commitments

Tech stocks fell on AI cost fears and Blackstone questions Anthropic's credit profile, while Cohere pledges C$4B in Canada.

Agents moving into open-ended environments

YC Labs ran agent swarms in Minecraft and Mindustry, Spawn lets players prompt its agent Savi to reshape a live game world, and an arXiv paper has LLM agents running quantum-spin experiments with peer review.

Signal vs noise

Signal · underreported

SkyPilot's Grace Blackwell scheduler gets 27% more usable GPUs from the same racks, a direct cost lever while investors question AI spend.

Noise · overhyped

The report on an alleged Chinese spy's ties to Jensen Huang is a geopolitical story with no new AI capability, product or policy detail.

What to watch

Watch for Anthropic's and Cursor's disclosure on the backdoored extension (affected installs, credential rotation guidance), and whether Large 4 benchmarks and licensing terms hold up against Gemini 4 Carbon.
