OpenAI seems to be silently re-enabling model training on Codex chats

My company is pretty paranoid about leaking IP to the frontier labs through prompts, so we've all been diligent about disabling data sharing in Codex/Claude Code/etc. But yesterday my coworkers and I noticed that the setting had been silently reenabled in Codex. None of us knowingly opted back in. You can check your settings here: https://chatgpt.com/settings/data-controls. Look for "Improve the model for everyone". Curious if this is an isolated issue or something more widespread. EDIT: looks like this has been noted before https://news....

Apple's US$5 trillion dilemma: iPhone Duo and AI raise stakes for next growth chapter

Apple's record fiscal 2026 performance left a central question unresolved: can premium-priced iPhones, AI, and expanding services sustain enough growth to justify a valuation approaching US$5 trillion? For new CEO John Ternus, the challenge is converting product innovation into lasting earnings growth rather than relying on Apple's established customer base.

From Natural Language to Exact Cover: A Neuro-Symbolic Approach to Zebra Puzzles

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) generation has substantially improved the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) on complex reasoning tasks, including code generation, data analysis, and exam-style question answering. Despite these advances, purely neural LLMs continue to struggle with elementary logical reasoning problems and lack the determinism, soundness, and reliability characteristic of symbolic reasoning systems. Conversely, classical symbolic methods such as SAT solving and exact cover guarantee correctness and completeness, but require problems to be expressed in highly specialized forma...

Not All Reasoning Generalizes: A Case Study on Learning Generalizable Reasoning Strategies in RLVR

Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) can enable generalizable improvement for large language model (LLM) reasoning. This paper studies how to incentivize such generalization via reasoning strategies. We study this question with a controllable equation-solving framework: finding multiple inputs x for equations f(x)=y, where f is a non-bijective string function. This setting makes reasoning strategies observable while supporting a clear definition of easy-to-hard out-of-distribution (OOD) shifts, e.g., more solutions, longer y, etc. We uncover a subtle RLVR failure: it teaches ...

Thought-deciphering via hierarchical EEG-to-text alignment

Communication is important for our well-being, but it can be impaired by disabilities, such as locked-in syndrome (LIS), cerebral palsy (CP), and dysarthria. Non-invasive brain-to-text brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a promising solution by providing an alternative communication pathway for people with communication disabilities. However, most recent breakthroughs have relied on large, cumbersome, and costly neuroimaging modalities, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Numerous studies have attempted decoding using the lighter and cheap...

Efficient Closure Learning in Dynamical Systems: A Comparison of Data-Assimilated and Embedded Approaches

Increased computing power has transformed computational science and improved predictive capabilities for complex systems, but many phenomena still exceed current simulation capabilities or require rapid evaluations for fast design iterations. Closure models address this challenge by approximating unresolved effects in reduced or incomplete dynamical systems. Data-driven closures offer a flexible mechanism for improving model accuracy and applicability, but approaches that embed the closure within a computational model for construction and training phases can be computationally expensive and c...

DynaSolver: A Neural Operator for Autoregressive 4D Flow Prediction with Dynamic Boundaries

Neural operators provide efficient surrogates for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), but most are designed for static geometries and are not equipped to model unsteady flows induced by continuously moving boundaries. We study dynamic-boundary 4D CFD prediction for articulated moving geometries and introduce RoboCFD-4D, a temporally resolved robotic CFD benchmark spanning diverse morphologies and flow conditions. To address the computational and autoregressive challenges of this setting, we propose DynaSolver, a neural operator that explicitly conditions on boundary evolution and causal flow ...

BISECT: Bilevel Spectral Decomposition for Low-Rank Continual Learning

Exemplar-free continual learning on pre-trained Vision Transformers increasingly relies on Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), yet prevailing methods govern the low-rank update space through strict subspace isolation. By projecting each incoming task into the approximate null space of historical token activations, isolation-based learners equate any cross-task feature overlap with catastrophic interference. We show that this orthogonality premise induces a structural bottleneck we term \emph{spectral starvation}: when down-projection bases are locked before task optimization, the gradient norm reachi...

Can LLM Agents Improve Imperfect Earth System Model Parameterizations?

Earth system models (ESMs) rely on parameterizations to represent unresolved processes such as convection, cloud microphysics, and turbulence. However, translating advances in physical understanding into stable, validated parameterizations and integrating them into ESMs often takes years. Agentic AI could accelerate this process and enable more systematic exploration of design choices. Using warm-rain collision-coalescence as a test case, we evaluate agents' ability to synthesize scientific literature, reimplement published bulk parameterizations, and propose new functional forms as different...

Variational Functional Neural Networks (vfNN)

We present a variational functional neural network (vfNN) algorithm that optimizes physically motivated continuum functionals in integral form (e.g., Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, or free energy) to find the states of a system. That way, vfNN bypasses solving the equations of motion (a.k.a. the Euler-Lagrange equations), which are in the form of differential equations. To this end, our approach is fundamentally different from conventional physics-informed neural networks (PINN) that solve differential equations by minimizing a phenomenological loss function involving higher order derivatives and a...

Library of Layers (LoL): Adaptively Ordering Transformer Layers at Runtime

Computer programmers chain together the same reusable computational primitives, for example, conditional statements or loops, but in different orders to implement different algorithms. In contrast, existing language model architectures always execute their layers in the same order. We introduce Library of Layers (LoL), an architecture that dynamically orders its layers during inference to solve the problem at hand. LoL has a single hyperparameter, the size of its global library of transformer blocks, that allows it to transition seamlessly between parameter reuse and sparsity, generalizing th...

VIAS: Value-Isolating Activation Steering for Multi-Value Alignment and Compliance for Organisations

Organisations increasingly deploy large language model agents that must follow organisational values. We check whether activation steering, which adds vectors to a model's internal activations during generation without changing its weights, can improve compliance beyond prompting alone. Since most scenarios involve several values at once, we focus on multi-value steering. A simple way to build these vectors is to contrast responses that follow all values relevant to a scenario with responses that violate them. However, this gives nearly identical vectors for different values: they capture a g...

RASP: Read-All, Sparse-Plasticity Continual Learning in a Stationary-Size LoRA

Parameter-efficient continual learning on pre-trained Vision Transformers largely relies on a costly premise: preventing catastrophic forgetting requires either spawning a dedicated LoRA branch per session---causing adapter parameters to scale linearly with task horizon---or applying sparse Mixture-of-Experts gating symmetrically to both forward and backward passes, which sacrifices representational rank at test time. We argue that reading consolidated knowledge and writing new task credit are fundamentally asymmetric operations. Because visual features in a shared low-rank space distribute a...

Harder Than the Task: From Technical to Organizational Difficulty in AI Benchmarking

AI benchmarks have made remarkable progress in measuring the ability of AI systems to perform increasingly demanding cognitive and technical tasks. Yet, many of these benchmarks treat technical tasks as the unit of analysis, while much economically valuable work takes place within organizations, where tasks are embedded in a system of relations. Within organizations, successful task performance depends not only on solving the technical demands of the task but also on navigating the interdependence of activities, distributed knowledge, differentiated authority, temporal constraints, conflictin...

A Bayesian Framework for Safe Optimal Control of Unknown Systems from Input-Output Data

As control engineering is applied to increasingly complex systems, learning-based control, which uses empirical data to reduce the reliance on first-principles models, has emerged as a promising paradigm. However, such approaches must cope with nonlinear and stochastic dynamics, the absence of state measurements, and scarce data, while ensuring safe operation under constraints, which requires rigorous uncertainty quantification. Whereas existing methods treat these challenges in isolation, this article proposes a Bayesian framework that jointly addresses them. A prior in state-space form is u...

Bridging Neural Tangent Kernel Analysis and Reinforcement Learning for Deep Function Approximation

Despite their widespread success across machine learning, the learning dynamics and generalization properties of neural networks remain poorly understood. The neural tangent kernel (NTK) provides an analytical characterization of the learning dynamics of infinitely wide neural networks and serves as a useful proxy for finite-width networks in supervised learning. In this work, we extend the NTK framework to reinforcement learning (RL) by introducing a temporal-difference (TD) flow formulation that accommodates time-varying mini-batches and TD targets, yielding a closed-form solution for value...
