Google’s AI note-taking app transcribes your meetings completely offline

Google has released an experimental note-taking app that can transcribe meetings and audio files entirely offline, as reported earlier by TechCrunch. The app, called Google AI Edge Foresight, is free to use and runs on macOS using the company's on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model. Similar to AI note-taking apps like Granola and Wispr Flow, Foresight summarizes your meetings while providing a space where you can take your own notes. Google says you can jot down shorthand bullet points during your meeting, and the app will transform them into "polished notes" based on the information in the transc...

Google is about to remove free access to Gemini Flash and Pro

Starting on October 9th, anyone using Google Gemini on a free plan will be limited to the Flash Lite model. Free users can currently choose from Gemini Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro, but now you'll need a $4.99/month Google AI Plus subscription to access the standard Flash model. However, that subscription is also getting a downgrade - it will soon no longer include Gemini Pro. Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email letting them know when they'll lose access to it. What’s behind the Google AI shakeup

Some of the biggest names on Google's AI team got new jobs this week. In some cases, including for legendary Googler Jeff Dean, those jobs are no longer at Google. Given that Google's models seem to be behind the best of what's coming out of anthropic and OpenAI, is this a sign of Google in turmoil? On this episode of The Vergecast, Nilay and David start by discussing the leadership shake-up at Google, the state of the AI race, and whether Googl...

Google’s NotebookLM can sum up your research in a TikTok-style clip

Google's NotebookLM is adding a new way to catch up on your notes: TikTok-style AI videos. The new feature is rolling out to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, allowing NotebookLM to generate 60-second vertical AI clips based on the sources you upload to the app. The example shared by Google details Australia's unsuccessful war on emus, pairing paper cutout-style AI art of emus with narration. It adds to some of the other ways NotebookLM lets you interact with your research, including by generating AI podcasts, cinematic videos, and visual explainers. Doom scrolling but make it educational ...

Google can now vibe-code you an Android app

Google is announcing a major upgrade to one of its vibe coding platforms: Beginning today, you can now use AI Studio to build native Android apps. With Google AI Studio, you can prompt your idea for an app and preview it with an embedded emulator of Android. When you want to try it out on an actual phone, you can connect an Android device to your computer and install it. In the future, you'll also be able to invite app testers from AI Studio. It sounds like you won't be able to whip up just any old app of your dreams, though; in a blog post, Google says that this "initial release" of the func...

AI chatbots are giving out people’s real phone numbers

People report that their personal contact info was surfaced by Google AI—and there’s apparently no easy way to prevent it. A Redditor recently wrote that he was “desperate for help”: for about a month, he said, his phone had been inundated by calls from “strangers” who were “looking for a lawyer, a product designer, a…
