ChatGPT now lets you lock your chats

The company says the feature is designed for situations where users might be discussing something personal or planning a surprise and want to keep those conversations private when handing their device to friends or family to show them something in another chat.

Eight states sue OpenAI, saying ChatGPT isn’t safe for kids

OpenAI is facing a new wave of lawsuits from eight US states that accuse the company of harming children and misleading customers about the safety of ChatGPT, as reported earlier by Reuters. The lawsuits, filed separately by Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana, allege OpenAI unlawfully put profits over safety when developing ChatGPT. The string of complaints claims that OpenAI violated local consumer protection laws by failing to warn customers about the dangers of ChatGPT, citing several lawsuits filed by the family members of teens and adults that al...

ChatGPT’s ‘Intelligent UI’ update fills its responses with pictures, charts, and buttons

OpenAI is launching a new Intelligent UI feature in ChatGPT that allows the chatbot to answer your questions with interactive visuals. The update, which is rolling out to all users alongside GPT-6, gives ChatGPT the ability to combine a text response with diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons, and more. In a blog post explaining the change, OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 when to generate interactive visuals over text, as well as how to format them in its response. An example shared by OpenAI shows how ChatGPT might show a diagram of a seven-speed bicycle if you ask about its design, complet...

ChatGPT is getting college planning tools

A preview of OpenAI’s College Planner. | Image: OpenAI OpenAI is bringing new tools to ChatGPT for Teens, a mode for teens introduced in August with safeguards and break reminders, to help users with the college application process. "College Planner brings together application requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial-aid steps for schools on a student's list in one plan," OpenAI says. "Students applying to several colleges can return to it to update their progress, use the timeline to plan ahead and see what's left to do. They can also ask ChatGPT questions along the way, from what a req...

Muse launches on the iPad

After launching nearly a month ago and spending several weeks as the top free app in Apple's App Store, the latest update to Meta's Muse iOS app introduces native support for the iPad. A Mac version of Meta's agentic AI tool (designed to compete with OpenClaw, ChatGPT's Dots, and Grok Bot) was released about a week after the original mobile version debuted expanding its usefulness to desktop tasks like organizing files. The new iPad version should function similar to Muse on iPhones, but better take advantage of the extra screen real estate and iPadOS' better multitasking capabilities. The ne...

ChatGPT for Teens is an ‘unacceptable risk,’ says Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that offers reviews of apps, services, and entertainment with a focus on youth safety, today said that OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teens is an "unacceptable risk." ChatGPT for Teens, introduced in August, has guardrails for teens and is designed to help students learn, but Common Sense Media says that the teen protections offered by the feature "fall short of what the company promised." Common Sense Media's assessment found that ChatGPT "doesn't send alerts to parents when it should," doesn't offer "the right help in crisis situations," and "still does kids' homework,...

OpenAI is adding text watermarking in ChatGPT and Codex

An invisible, machine-readable watermark in text output is rolling out to ChatGPT and Codex, but only for users in the European Union at first. OpenAI says its textGrain watermarking "matched or exceeded" other approaches like Google DeepMind's SynthID for text, which is also the basis for the watermarking Anthropic announced in August. Like OpenAI, Anthropic made the move to meet the requirements of the EU's AI Act; however, not everyone was happy to learn about the addition. OpenAI also included scores from AI benchmarks showing similar performance from watermarked and unwatermarked text. B...

OpenAI PR tells journalist to ‘move on’ while asking Sam Altman about a ChatGPT user’s suicide

An OpenAI publicist tried to change the topic of CEO Sam Altman's interview with Vanity Fair's Mark Guiducci after the editor brought up a ChatGPT user's suicide. When Guiducci confronted Altman about the incident, the publicist warned Guiducci about running out of time, saying she'd like to "move on" to another topic. The interruption came shortly after Guiducci asked Altman if he knew who Laura Reiley is, a journalist who wrote an essay for The New York Times about her daughter's conversations with ChatGPT before she took her own life. "Her daughter committed suicide after speaking to ChatG...

OpenAI is sticking more ads in ChatGPT

OpenAI's latest ad format will put images of sponsored products and services on your screen. The ads, which OpenAI will begin testing in the US later this month, will "initially" appear when you generate images with ChatGPT, according to an announcement on Monday. The company first brought ads to ChatGPT in February. Until now, ChatGPT's ads only showed a company's name, logo, and a link to its product in a "sponsored" section beneath your chat. OpenAI's visual ad format will similarly remain separate from the image you generate and will "not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Ads won't...
