OpenAI agents hacked an Australian government website in search for data

Sam Altman attends a UN Security Council meeting on AI. | Getty Images OpenAI's artificial intelligence agents hacked an Australian government website and attempted to breach numerous other government and university websites. The attack appears to be the first confirmed instance of a rogue AI agent breaching a government website, adding fuel to rapidly intensifying concerns about the safety of advanced AI systems and the responsibility of the companies building them. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an agent from...

Gemini 4 is almost ready, says new Google DeepMind chief

Google is reportedly nearing the launch of its long awaited Gemini 4 model, after dawdling behind rival developers on flagship AI releases. Speaking with The Information during his first media appearance as the leader of Google's DeepMind division, Koray Kavukcuoglu said that Gemini 4 is currently in its refinement stage, and that the company is aiming to launch the model "much earlier" than the end of the year. "Our intention is to, like - as soon as possible - to release an early post-training output because we see the results and we are excited," Kavukcuoglu told the publication, adding th...

Everything new coming to Meta’s AI agent Muse

CEO Mark Zuckerberg kicked off the company’s annual Connect event in Menlo Park on Wednesday with a keynote that made one thing clear: Meta is going all-in on Muse. It's even coming to Meta's AI glasses.

Meta is making a standalone Muse AI gadget

Meta is building a dedicated hardware device for its new Muse AI agent. The product, called Muse Charm, was briefly shown off by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the end of his Meta Connect presentation. It looks almost like a chunky smart watch without the strap - just a big screen, plus a little lanyard for carrying the device around. The Muse Charm has a fingerprint sensor on the top right corner, which you can press to activate and begin speaking to the agent. There appears to be a small camera on the device as well, plus what looks like at least three holes for microphones on the front. Zucke...

Muse is coming to Meta smart glasses

Just a couple of weeks after launching Muse, Meta announced that it's "working on" bringing the agent to its smart glasses, including the new glasses it unveiled at Meta Connect. Users will be able to activate Muse from their glasses by saying its name and ask it to handle tasks like guiding a workout, logging meals, or helping them shop for products they're looking at. Muse is just one of several major updates coming to Meta's glasses. They're also getting some new accessibility features, like a Hearing Enhancement feature Meta says is "FDA-cleared software for adults with perceived mild to ...

Meta ditches the camera on its newest smart glasses

The Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses have no cameras. | Photo by Brett Putman / The Verge Walking around Meta Connect 2026, everyone's sporting smart glasses in all sorts of shapes, colors, and sizes. It's a marked difference here, a tech bubble where "pervert glasses" are not a concern. Outside Connect, the public backlash against wearable surveillance tech - a catchall term that encompasses not just smart glasses, but also smartwatches and AI pendants - is gaining steam. So it's incredibly curious timing that this year, the company is launching Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses: smart glasses infused wi...

Meta is making Muse more powerful and will let you video chat with it, too

Meta is quickly iterating on its new Muse AI agent, announcing a bunch of updates today that make the bot more capable and able to chat with you in more ways. Muse agents are getting their own email addresses that they can use for accomplishing tasks. You'll also be able to communicate with your Muse agent over the new email addresses, too. In addition, the recently launched Muse Mac app will be getting the ability to use your computer. Meta is also going to give you another way to chat with its popular AI agent: video calls. Since its recent launch, the primary way to talk with Muse was thro...

Radiology AI has made remarkable strides in detecting abnormalities across chest X-rays, pathology slides, and 2D scans. Yet one of the most clinically rich and data-dense modalities—the 3D computed tomography (CT) scan—remains largely underserved by modern vision language models (VLMs). Frontier general-purpose models perform poorly on volumetric imaging, and most open medical AI models lack the… Source

Meta Connect 2026: The biggest news and announcements

It’s about time for Meta Connect, the company’s annual product launch event. This year, given the company’s major focus on AI and wearables like smart glasses, it seems likely that we’ll see updates from CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his team on those categories. The company has been facing significant scrutiny because of how some users have been covertly recording other people using the glasses, meaning that one of the biggest announcements of the show could be its rumored camera-free pair. Connect has also traditionally been a venue for updates on Meta’s VR hardware and software. While the compan...

Meta Connect 2026 live blog: On the ground at Mark Zuckerberg’s next big product launch

It's time once again for Meta's annual September product launch event, and The Verge is on the ground in Menlo Park to cover the show live. Meta says that today's keynote by Mark Zuckerberg will be about how "Meta is building a future for everyone" - something he wrote at length about in a recent essay about AI, smart glasses, and more. That means we can expect more news from Zuckerberg and his team on those topics; perhaps we'll hear more about Meta's recently launched Muse AI agent and new glasses hardware. Whatever Zuckerberg and Meta have to say about smart glasses will be particularly no...

Validate GPU Cluster Readiness Before AI Workloads Land

A GPU cluster can pass every health check and still fail to run an AI workload. Even when every GPU, network link, and pod reports healthy, a 512-GPU training job can underperform or fail. The cause may be one slow GPU, a link that degrades under load, or a configuration that quietly routes traffic over a slower path. Operators may not discover the problem until hours into the run or until a… Source

Meta’s AI agent is a cute little guy who’s great at spending my money

An adorable little bear that wants to help you buy things. Modern life comes with an unending, auto-populating to-do list. It never ceases to amaze me how I can be doing nothing at all, minding my own business, and suddenly something needs to be taken care of. You're telling me a tree branch fell in the backyard and now I have to figure out what to do with it? The tree just assigned me homework? Oh, our trash collection company canceled our account out of nowhere and now I have to send email about it? Repeatedly? Totally unfair. These are the things that we've been told for years that AI will...

Manage Kubernetes Node Fleets with NodeWright

Kubernetes manages what runs on your nodes. Managing the nodes themselves is the challenge: kernel settings, system packages, storage layouts, security agents,... Kubernetes manages what runs on your nodes. Managing the nodes themselves is the challenge: kernel settings, system packages, storage layouts, security agents, and the host-level tuning that GPU workloads depend on. Many teams manage this with Ansible playbooks, custom scripts, and manual runbooks. That works until a new cluster comes up in a different region, a kernel upgrade breaks RDMA… Source

Data centers are black boxes, but California wants to change that

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a slate of bills on Monday that could finally give communities better data - and more say - on how data centers impact their electricity bills and water supply. As data centers invade a growing number of communities across the US, they've triggered protests over how the infrastructure underpinning AI might stress power grids and local water systems. That's fueled partly by concerns about how difficult it is to see just how much electricity or water they're actually gobbling up. California's new disclosure rules won't offer a full picture, but starting next ...

Anthropic’s biolab made a discovery it’s comparing to Crispr

Anthropic says its AI Claude has "autonomously discovered" a new enzyme system similar to machinery behind the powerful gene-editing tool Crispr. It's the first result from Anthropic's newly-launched wet lab and an early test of Claude's usefulness for science as the company prepares to go public. The company says Claude found the enzyme system after searching through a massive database of DNA sequences, adding that its scientists' involvement was limited to the initial prompt and lab work. Over 21 hours, Anthropic said nearly 950 Claude agents worked through 210 million tokens before one spo...
