Se-DPO: Self-Evolving Token Credit for Direct Preference Optimization

Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) aggregates token-level log-probability ratios via uniform summation, implicitly treating all tokens as contributing equally to the preference signal. However, the contribution of individual tokens to the preference signal varies. We introduce token credit, which modulates each token's KL regularization based on its contribution to the preference outcome. We derive that effective token credit is proportional to the magnitude of each token's implicit reward, and observe that this quantity evolves substantially during training. This implies that static token ...

Beyond Myopic World Models: Long-Horizon End-to-End Training for Direct Future Prediction

World models are expected to support imagination over extended temporal horizons, yet most are still trained through local few-step prediction objectives and deployed by recursively rolling out their own predictions. This creates a fundamental mismatch: few-step losses optimize local transition fidelity, while long-horizon prediction depends on how errors and gradients propagate through the entire trajectory. As a result, transitions with different downstream influence on the endpoint are treated uniformly during training, and small local errors are amplified through recursive inference. We a...

FUSE: Feature-Wise Unified Specialization with Cross-Column Exchange for Mixed-Type Tabular Flow Matching

Generating mixed-type tabular data requires jointly modeling diverse feature distributions and their complex cross-column dependencies. Variational flow matching handles distinct endpoints via factorized distributions, yet leaves feature-specific processing and cross-column interactions implicit within a shared backbone. We introduce Feature-wise Unified Specialization with cross-column Exchange (FUSE) to explicitly separate these roles. FUSE applies separate adaptive mixture modules to numerical and categorical features, allowing each feature to combine shared specialized subnetworks, while ...

SAGA: Score-Weighted Adaptive Generation Alignment for Low-Resource Nordic Language Models

Preference optimisation has proven effective for improving large language models but typically relies on costly human preference annotations. Extending these methods to morphologically rich, low-resource languages remains challenging because such annotations are scarce. We present SAGA (Score-weighted Adaptive Generation Alignment), a parser-guided preference optimisation framework that replaces human labels with dependency-parser supervision. SAGA converts parser judgements into preference pairs for delta-DPO, combines parser quality with lexical diversity in a composite reward, filters low-...

QC-SMOTE: Quality-Controlled SMOTE for Imbalanced Classification

Class imbalance poses a significant challenge in classification, where existing methods such as SMOTE often generate low-quality synthetic samples in regions with noise or class overlap. We propose QC-SMOTE, a quality-controlled oversampling framework that estimates minority sample reliability using a composite neighbourhood trustworthiness score combining local density, safe-level, and isolation from the majority class. Synthetic candidates are generated using an IPQ-guided best-of-K strategy that evaluates midpoint purity and, when required, majority clearance, with allocation guided by sam...

Scaling Linear Mode Connectivity and Merging to Billion Parameter Pretrained Transformers

Linear mode connectivity (LMC) provides a promising foundation for understanding and merging independently trained neural networks, but existing methods typically optimize the interpolation path from only one model endpoint, limiting their scalability and effectiveness for large pretrained transformers. We propose a novel and scalable framework for enabling LMC-based model merging to {\em billion-parameter pretrained transformers}. Our method applies properly parameterized functionality-preserving weight transformations to align functionally equivalent solutions, and introduces a dual learnin...

On Local Population-Risk Certificates

This paper develops local certificates for population-risk increments around a current model. For a local candidate set \(\mathcal D\), the certificate is a two-sided confidence band for \(P({\ell_{θ+v}-\ell_θ})\) over \(v\in\mathcal D\). As an application, the upper endpoint of this band yields a risk-controlled update rule: an update is accepted only when its certified upper endpoint is nonpositive; otherwise the current model is retained.

StepGuard: Guarding Web Navigation via Single-Step Calibration

Web navigation requires agents to follow natural language goals, interact with web pages, and produce accurate answers. While recent advances leverage vision-language models and reinforcement learning, existing methods still suffer from single-step fragility due to reward misalignment and error propagation. To tackle the reward entanglement, we design Dynamic Dual-Policy Optimization (DDPO), which dynamically switches between a navigation-first mode for exploration and an answer-first mode for question-answering to mitigate reward conflict. To calibrate the single-step error, we propose Confi...

When Good Verifiers Go Bad: Self-Improving VLMs Can Regress on New Tasks

Verifier-driven self-DPO is a common recipe for self-improving production visual-language models. In this setup, a frozen verifier scores candidate generations, the top- and bottom-scoring candidates form a preference example, and DPO updates the learner. The deployment-time assumption is monotone: a stronger verifier should yield a stronger student. We show that this assumption can fail because verifier quality is highly task-specific. On a four-rung open-source verifier ladder across MathVista, MMMU, and BLINK, the same verifiers that are above-threshold and improve a Qwen-3-VL-2B student o...

When Does Mixing Help? Analyzing Query Embedding Interpolation in Multilingual Dense Retrieval

While mixed-language querying is ubiquitous in multilingual communities, the sensitivity of dense retrievers to such queries remains poorly understood. We present a ratio-controlled study on mMARCO that systematically evaluates retrieval performance by varying the mixing proportion of parallel query translations via embedding-level mixing -- constructing mixed queries as an interpolation of monolingual embeddings. Experiments with BGE-M3 demonstrate that an optimal mixing ratio outperforms the best monolingual endpoint in 88/105 cases. We uncover a distinct asymmetry driven by English dominan...

A Quantitative Experimental Repeated Measures Study of Training Dynamics in a Small Llama Style Language Model Under a Compute-Aware Token Budget

This study examines training dynamics in a small Llama-style language model trained under a fixed, compute-constrained token budget. Rather than evaluating efficiency solely through endpoint performance, the study uses a quantitative experimental repeated measures design to analyze how validation loss, validation perplexity, rolling volatility, backslide behavior, spike behavior, and between-seed variability change across token-based training intervals. Six independent training runs were conducted on a 4.26-million-parameter model using the TinyStories corpus, CPU-based full-precision trainin...

Learning to Attack and Defend: Adaptive Red Teaming of Language Models via GRPO

AI red teaming must continually adapt to evolving attackers and defenders. Reinforcement learning offers a promising approach to discovering novel attacks, and co-training methods can produce more robust defenders in tandem. Recent works have demonstrated the efficacy of attacker-defender co-training by applying PPO and DPO, but report that GRPO is unstable in this setting. We introduce AdvGRPO, a co-training framework that makes GRPO viable for joint attacker-defender optimization using dense multi-channel rewards and decoupled advantage normalization. Training progresses through a curriculu...

Emergence of Context Characteristics Sensitivity in Large Language Models

During instruction fine-tuning (IFT), large language models (LLMs) learn to follow instructions by using the provided context to answer a query. While prior work has studied how context characteristics correlate with context usage by the LLM, this analysis has been limited to inference time, leaving open how these relationships are acquired in the first place. Here, we measure how models' sensitivity to such characteristics shifts across successive IFT stages: supervised fine-tuning (SFT), direct preference optimization (DPO), and reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR). Experim...

Towards Non-Monotonic Entailment in Propositional Defeasible Standpoint Logic

Recent work in defeasible reasoning has seen notions of preferential semantics and entailment in the style of Kraus et al. applied to modal logics. However, work in this field has focussed primarily on satisfiability checking, and monotonic notions of entailment, which may be inferentially weak. One particular modal logic where this has been introduced is propositional standpoint logics, where modalities can express the views of different viewpoints. This has resulted in the formalisation of propositional defeasible standpoint logic (PDSL). In this paper, we propose a means of lifting the cla...

Physics-Guided Policy Optimization with Self-Distillation

Self-distilled policy optimization (SDPO) has become a popular paradigm for LLM post-training, where a model learns from its own predictions conditioned on privileged information. SDPO, however, is sensitive to how much each update step should be trusted: corrections from a self-teacher can be highly informative on some batches and misleading on others, and applying them uniformly with a fixed step size can destabilize training. Drawing inspiration from viscous-fluid dynamics and formalizing the analogy at the SDE level, we propose Physics-Guided Policy Optimization (PGPO), which introduces a...

OpenURMA: A Clean-Room Open Implementation of the Unified Bus Protocol

Modern datacenter RDMA is bottlenecked at the network interface, not the wire. A NIC running RoCE or InfiniBand holds per-connection state for every (application, remote-endpoint) pair - hundreds of megabytes at 1024-application fanout - and pays a four-traversal PCIe round trip on a 64-byte operation, inflating latency an order of magnitude beyond the wire. Both follow from the Queue Pair over PCIe abstraction RDMA inherits from InfiniBand. Huawei's Unified Bus (UB), a public 2025 specification, changes the abstraction: it decouples per-application endpoint state from per-host transport stat...

Learning When to Think While Listening in Large Audio-Language Models

Recent advances in Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs) have made real-time, streaming spoken interaction increasingly practical. In this setting, reasoning quality and responsiveness are tightly coupled: delaying reasoning until the speech endpoint can improve answer quality but moves deliberation into user-visible response delay, while answering too early risks committing before decisive evidence arrives. We introduce a learnable wait-think-answer control formulation for LALMs. Motivated by the incremental nature of human conversation, the controller decides under partial audio evidence when...
