Follow-up: Trying to make NVIDIA GPUs plug-and-play on Macs. Found hidden RDMA symbols Apple doesn't want you to see — zero-copy GPU memory sharing might already work.

**TL;DR:** My last post about testing TinyGPU attracted some interest. This is the follow-up. The Blackwell card is detected and the driver loads, but NVIDIA's GSP firmware fails to boot through TB5 (known issue, I'm working with tinygrad on it). While debugging that, I went down a rabbit hole and discovered that Apple's RDMA subsystem accepts Metal GPU buffers for zero-copy network transfers — something nobody has documented. I also found hidden `ibv_reg_dmabuf_mr` symbols in Apple's libibverbs that suggest GPUDirect RDMA might be possible on macOS without any kernel modification. Here's eve...

Apple agrees to pay iPhone owners $250 million for not delivering AI Siri

Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit that accused it of misleading customers about the availability of its Apple Intelligence features. The proposed settlement would apply to people in the US who purchased all models of the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 15 Pro between June 10th, 2024 and March 29th, 2025. The settlement will resolve a 2025 lawsuit, alleging Apple's advertisements created a "clear and reasonable consumer expectation" that Apple Intelligence features would be available with the launch of the iPhone 16. The lawsuit claimed Apple's products "offered a ...

Apple could let you pick a favorite AI model in iOS 27

The next update to Apple's operating systems could allow users to choose their preferred AI model for running Apple Intelligence. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to allow third-party chatbots to power its AI features system-wide in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, all expected for this fall. In addition to running Siri, compatible third-party AI models, called "Extensions," will also now be able to run other Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground. According to Gurman, Apple will also allow users to choose different Siri voices for different...

John Ternus’s first big problem is AI

Less than a year ago, Apple made headlines for a lack of AI announcements at its annual WWDC event. Ten months later, the company has announced that hardware executive John Ternus will succeed longtime CEO Tim Cook as chief executive - and the official release doesn't mention AI once. Ternus, currently Apple's SVP of hardware engineering, will take over as CEO on September 1st, after Cook's decade and a half in the role. Ternus is a 25-year veteran of the company and the first Apple CEO in about 30 years to come from the hardware sector. According to Apple, he's led hardware engineering work ...
